Does astronomy/astrophysics benefit society and if so how?

Many of the greatest discoveries in science have been made through research into a subject most people thought was useless or wouldn't produce anything useful (like electricity). Sure, there might not be all that many useful applications for my research right now, but maybe someday. And yes, I could have gone into medicine instead (and made a lot more money) but it just doesn't interest me as much.
