Canine CPR on a dog with a collapsing trachea?

My Dachshund has a collapsing trachea and although being closely follwed by a vet, he does cough in a manner that is alarming, especially at night during deep sleep. I was wondering, just one day if he could not catch his breath and was gasping, what could I do to help him? I have read breathing down his throat (as one does during human CPR) could be dangerous for his lungs. Thanks all in advance.
