What real harm is there in using wireless devices on an aircraft?

Before takeoff, the flight attendant always says that wireless devices should never be used in flight. But if I leave my laptop's wireless adapter on, or use GPS devices during flight, why should there be a problem? After all, these devices receive data, not transmit it.
